Be careful--"unique" can be cute on a small baby and not so cute on a growing kid who may have to endure teasing, and a thermonuclear disaster for an adult trying to land and hold a job or get promoted. Here are some thoughts--I was a teacher for a long time and have seen name fads come and go.

1. Forget all those "la-fa-sha-da" prefixes. The fad is over and people are tired of tripping over them.

2. Avoid anything which might sound like a pharmaceutical. "Tylenol, you get in here!" Is not a good introduction to the neighborhood.

3. Forget about designer names and car makes. The last bell has already rung on "Chanel" or "Halston" or "Ferrari" or "Porsche."

4. Do not give a name that sounds like a machine part. Poor kid, a gifted quarterback from my home town is named "Tyrod."

5. Stay away from geographical features. "Sierra" might be charming, but too often things get out of hand. I once had a class with a girl named Brooklyn and a guy named Chicago. No lie--Chicago!! I can hardly wait until Olduvai Gorge or River Styx shows up on a class roster.

6. Don't get too cutesy with names for twins or siblings. I once had fraternal twins in a class. She was named "Latrina," not unusual for the times, but the parents got carried away and named the boy "Latrine."

7. Don't hand out a name that puts impossible expectations on a kid. Last month I met a family who had named their daughter "Messiah." She's nine years old and now is autistic, I kid you not. Wouldn't you?

8. And one last scary statistic--after teaching College English for decades in every possible environment, one fact became painfully clear: over 90% of the cute-named kids never made it to sophomore year.

But there's a ray of hope--get hold of a baby name book or download one at bomis.com--there are tons of wonderful names that have fallen out of favor for no good reason and could use a good home in your family.Anyone have some unique baby names?
